Hi,
Thanks for your informative commentary on FBI GUI, yours was the least hysterical description of it I've found so far.
FBI GUI is another example of contempt for their customers on the part of hp. Probably the brain child of one of the jr.
execs , the new breed who can barely spell their own name who maybe thought it was funny, and then allowed to proceed by a management that couldn't care less. Why should they care when they're allowed to have their garbage
produced by slaves and then brought back here to be sold at 800% profit? There is no excuse for the shoddy hardware and software coming out of hp these days. I'm still recovering from the shock of realizing that hp and microsoft had partnerd up to create a laptop that would only run vista. No more dual booting with Linux allowed! At least not on the same HD. Will attempt again by installing Ubuntu on #2 HD (which is the only reason I bought the dv9812)...as soon as it's back from the repair center. I can't think of anything more healing for my computing enthusiasm right now than running open souce on a new hp laptop. Cheerio! anonEmoose

Ouch! That's even worse than my experience. In the end I was able to make the computer work properly, until I put it to sleep -- and then it would just blue screen when you tried to "wake" it.

In the end I had to return it to the store, and I decided not to get another one. So I didn't get the chance to examine this installer better. Personally I think that the installer software is just broken for some HP laptops.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

This is too bad. In the old days you restored your OS first, then you'd use the manufacturer CD to install all your drivers. It used to be a process that you could observe and fix if necessary. Unfortunately with Vista the manufacturers are highly encouraged to instead make the whole restoration process opaque and thus unfixable when it goes wrong. Personally it's put me off buying a new laptop right now.
