The next nomination for SCOTUS by George W. Bush will be Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Why Hatch? He’s been on the Judiciary Committee forever, and as such would have little trouble garnering its support; politically he’s also everything that Bush can look for in a SCOTUS candidate — anti-abortion, pro-death-penalty, in favor of religion in public life, etc. He’s risen as far as someone can rise in the US Senate, and he’s tried to run for President with no success whatsoever, so this is the natural progression for him.
Bush just can’t afford to nominate someone who has a risk of not making it, and Hatch is a safe choice. Hatch knows the committee who will review his nomination, and he already knows those (Senators) who will get to vote for or against him. He’d have to step down from the comittee, but then he’d be replaced by another Republican. It’s an opportunity for the right-wingnuts to put Rick “Santorum” Santorum (dubbed by many as “the finest mind of the 13th century”) in a position of honour, just before he gets booted out when he’s up for reelection.
Of course this would mean that I’m right, and everyone else is wrong about this, but I have a good feeling 🙂
You heard it here first…
