At least we now know why the President called a lawyer! Apparently he needed the lawyer’s advice as to whether he was going to need the lawyer’s advice or not, which is interesting in itself. At least we know who the lawyer is now, a man from the firm that defended Richard Secord in the Iran-Contra hearings… nice to see that Republicans of dubious ethics are, if nothing else, loyal on the long term.

George W. Bush has retained legal counsel in connection with the grand jury investigation into the ‘outing’ of undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame.

George W. Bush has retained legal counsel in connection with the grand jury investigation into the ‘outing’ of undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame. Now, why would the President want to do a thing like that? Well, for one thing, this is an investigation into criminal activity, and might even involve the PATRIOT act. We know that the leak was obviously committed by someone who had access to the identities of undercover CIA agents. It is also clear that this “outing” was done in the context of political revenge against Ms. Plame’s husband, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, for making statements which were true but politically embarassing to the White House. The plot gets thicker and thicker.
